How long does it take?

Usually seven to ten working days, depending on the size of the site. You will see changes in Search Console within two to four weeks of it finishing.

Do I need the monthly plan afterwards?

Not automatically. If you are in a quiet market with few competitors doing SEO, the setup can hold on its own for a long time. We will say so rather than sell you a retainer you do not need.
